My brother just pointed out how similar he is to Roger the relegator in the way he backs off.

Doesn't matter who we have at right back if he has no cover in front to help out. Seemed like Antonio was told to stay up the pitch and neither Noble or Kouyate were anywhere to be seen. I think Byram is decent but like most young players will have some good and bad games. Glad we aren't relying on Antonio playing there.

My take on Byram is he is tidy but lacks confidence..maybe that's down to the poor form of the two centre halves alongside him but he should learn plenty from Arbeloa

Left to exposed yesterday. The pitch is wider than UP and wingers (old term) can hug the line and attack their full backs and use there pace. Nobody backed him up and he will learn. To big a gap between defenders and forwards.

Re: Sam Byram at right back

Simply changing Byram does not supply a complete answer because the way we played left him vulnerable as well. If we had still had Tomkins available and he'd played right back yesterday it would have limited our attacking potential but on the other hand we would have defended better and Collins would have looked a better player too.
It's early days, no need to panic and plenty of time to sort this out at Rush Green.

Opposing teams will target Byram because they have seen that he doesn't quite cut it. Its imperative Arbeloa is ready asap.

I'd be surprised if Arbeloa doesn't get fast tracked into the defence for the West Brom match. Two good full backs plus Ogbonna's return in place of Collins might improve our defending. I'm not a fan of Reid either, but it's probably too early for Reece Oxford.
We MUST buy an experienced CB with leadership qualities in the January window. If Bilic can't organise a defence capable of keeping clean sheets,he will probably have to make way for someone who can.

Re: Sam Byram at right back

I just think the way we set up to attack we need full backs that almost never put a foot wrong, a world class centre half who can both read danger and cover it anywhere across the back or just a competent defensive midfielder who can help out our defence.
Personally I think get that midfield position right and other players particularly in defence start looking better, Noble and Koyuate are not that player but unless both are undropable I thought that would be a far easier position to address than the constant search for world class defenders at bargain prices.
My opinion is that Noble abilitywise is the weak link when Payet and Lanzini play but without him the team looks lacking any leadership.
Byram needs help on the pitch just like Antonio did at Right Back but sadly I don't see that happening so it is very difficult to fairly judge him on what I have seen.

Kept backing off yesterday, was content to just watch the ball go by him, he'll improve but it's a shame Arbeloa isn't up to speed already.
Reminds me of Cresswell in his first handful of games for us.

All that's true but one on one with the attacker he should NEVER be showing him the inside. Not at 15 years old, not at 23.
I like him and think he'll develop. Good athlete, brave, decent technique but like too many of today's FBs, does not really know how to defend.

we were wetting ourselves with excitement when we pipped everton to sign him
personally, i think he is ok, not being helped with sloppy defenders around him.

That is a very good point, the CB's and central MF are not helping.
But by contrast, take a look at Fuka today. Recently arrived, relatively young but very solid. He was a rare shining light today. In fact, over the starting games it is arguable that he is the best of the lot so far.
Byram looks way off his standard so far.

Re: Sam Byram at right back

I think we need to factor what we demand of our full backs before judging them, we don't expect Reid and Collins to join attacks in open play and if we did I damn sure someone would ensure their positions were covered if a move breaks down.
Our full backs are an attacking option as much as they are defensive, so logic would assume that between our centre halves and holding midfielder they would be afforded some protection but without adequate those positions don't seem to do that so I think we are bit harsh in criticising our full backs considering the attacking job they are trying to do.
I thought both full backs got forward well at times but particularly Byram struggled when they counter attacked though I don't think he had much help in dealing with them.
I think our defence needs to work as a unit by covering each others weaknesses because individually they get exploited but unfortunately too often for me under Slaven we don't seem to gel as a unit defensively.

Re: Sam Byram at right back

Byram is 80% there as a defender. Quick, nice touch, good control and has a pass.
Problem is that he does let his mind wander and he gets caught out of position, then pulls, lunges or grabs - hence his yellow per game
Thing is, I am not sure that he will actually recover the missing 20% and dont think he has shown any improvement at all since arriving and will be forever, a good natural player with a ricket or two in him per game
My guess is that he will be replaced in the first team and will ultimately drop down a division to find his level.

And I don't buy this bollocks about Arbeloa being a 'mentor' for Byram. He's 23 years old, he ain't a kid. We have plenty of coaches. We needed a proper right back.

He couldn't handle Igalo today, pure and simple. To be fair, he looked tighter with Antonio in front of him than Payet, and you could see the difference when they swapped over.

I started a thread a few weeks back along the lines of 'we have been letting in some poor goals'. That hasn't changed.
Byram doesn't look good enough Reid & Collins are all over the place Noble & Kouyate don't protect the back 4.
We let in 50 goals last season - huge problem not addressed. Obiang @ Ogbonna should start.

Bilic specifically said he had been bought to play not to coach. I reckon he'll be in as soon as he's fit.

Yea i agree on last few comments. He's not a total disaster by any means
Naive and plenty to improve on.
Hopefully with Arbeloa and Ogbonna slotting into the back four..that will sort a lot of issues out.

Arbeloa I think has been bought in as much to coach him as to play.
I like we're trying him and whilst raw will improve with game time.
